This year, AOII supports the Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome Canada.

Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome, first described in 1964, is a multi-faceted disorder impacting the pancreas, bone marrow, and skeleton, but other organs may also be affected

In infancy, the first symptoms are loose, foul-smelling, greasy stools, and failure to gain weight and grow normally. The pancreas fails to produce the enzymes essential to digest food. The child does not absorb enough nutrients to grow and develop normally. The bone marrow in which blood cells are produced is also affected. White blood cells that help fight infections may be low in number and/or not function properly, leaving the body poorly defended against life threatening infections. Anemia and problems with blood clotting may be present. These youngsters are small for their age and often have bone abnormalities, the cause of which is undetermined.
